Viewpointe and Data Support Systems Partner to Speed Electronic Image Exchange for Banking Industry

VIEWPOINTE AND DATA SUPPORT SYSTEMS PARTNER TO SPEED ELECTRONIC IMAGE EXCHANGE FOR BANKING INDUSTRY Financial institutions will be provided with image-based “Day 2” services

Charlotte, N.C., November 18, 2003 – Viewpointe Archive Services, LLC, and Data Support Systems, Inc. (DSS) announced today they have forged a partnership to accelerate the banking industry’s participation in electronic image exchange. Under terms of the agreement, Viewpointe will install and centrally run DSS’s T.R.I.PS™ software – enabling Viewpointe bank customers to process exceptions and returns of images rather than paper.

Recognizing that banks must use images throughout their operations to reap the nearly $2.1 billion in annual cost savings that image exchange will bring, Viewpointe and DSS have united to offer Day 2 software applications that allow banks to process returns and exceptions with images quickly. “Day 2” operations include activities, like resolving returns and exceptions, that require additional processing or handling of a check the day after the paper is received, thus the industry moniker – Day 2.

“Viewpointe’s focus continues to be on finding better, faster ways to help banks truncate paper and exchange check images,” said John Lettko, Viewpointe’s Chairman and CEO. “Now that Check 21 has become law, there is a sense of urgency among banks to become fully image enabled. By collaborating with DSS, Viewpointe can provide image-based Day 2 services that better position our customers to reap the economic benefits of imaging and engage in image exchange.”

The decision to partner with DSS was a logical one for Viewpointe, Mr. Lettko explained. “In addition to the positive input provided by our customers, DSS’s technological capabilities and market leadership made it easy for us to partner with them.”

DSS will provide the technology and support for its T.R.I.P.S.™ (Touchless Return Item Processing System) package and Viewpointe will maintain the infrastructure and centrally run the applications that will allow banks to process returns and exceptions with images. The DSS application enables each Viewpointe customer to use an image-based exceptions and returns system without having to evaluate vendors, purchase equipment and software, and implement and maintain their own systems’ infrastructure – saving time and money.

“By combining Viewpointe’s image archive expertise with our core competency in Day 2 processing, we have assembled the complete, premier solution to move large players in the industry to image exchange faster,” said Carl A. Bortol, Jr., President of DSS. “Our suite of fully integrated and image-based Day 2 applications running on Viewpointe’s platform will allow banks to set unprecedented efficiencies in their Day 2 processing and fully participate in image exchange.”

The Day 2 service will allow financial institutions to process back office items quickly, accurately, and inexpensively through imaging and workflow technologies. Bank employees processing Day 2 items will connect to Viewpointe’s environment through their workstations. Instead of having to match the original paper check with other information such as account numbers and account information, employees can simultaneously pull up the image and account data on their computers and quickly make decisions. Additionally, the decisions are no longer tied to paper, which means they are not geographically tied either. The T.R.I.P.S.™ application’s workflow technology gives banks the power to electronically shift workloads from one employee to another, or from a busy processing site to a slower site so the work can be done on time.

Viewpointe will offer the Day 2 service on a pay-per-use basis so banks do not have to spend a huge amount of capital and undergo a lengthy budget approval process. Banks can leverage Viewpointe’s economies of scale so it costs less than it would for banks to do it themselves.

Experts and analysts alike maintain that the use of images in Day 2 operations is a key piece of the image exchange puzzle. Mr. Lettko added, “We believe our customers will save millions in operating costs by implementing a widespread imaging solution using our infrastructure and the Day 2 applications developed and supported by DSS.”
